49th Virginia Infantry Regiment Members

Attend Funeral of the

Crew of the H. L. Hunley

After a rocky start, the 49th Virginia members had to settle for a hotel on the Atlantic Ocean at Charleston's Folly Beach.

Once settled in, our members visited some local sites in Charleston.  Then, the 49th Virginia members visited Magnolia Cemetery the day before the funeral procession and Hunley crew burial.

On Friday April 16, the day before the funeral procession, the bodies of the H. L. Hunley crew lie in state in the Church of the Holy Communion located at 218 Ashley Street in Charleston.

49th Virginia members wait at White Point Gardens on the Charleston Battery just before lining up for the funeral procession.

After the funeral procession march of over 4.5 miles through Charleston to Magnolia Cemetery members of the 49th Virginia Infantry take a well deserved rest in the Cemetery.

Later on Saturday evening, members of the 49th Virginia Infantry attended the Confederate Grand Ball at the Citadel in Charleston.

After a whirlwind weekend, everyone hit the road for home...
